Multiple Site Networking

Network Menu BarIf you are anything like me you will come up with the “perfect” idea for a website and go skipping off to buy the “perfect” domain name to go with. At this point I tend to have a memory lapse and totally forget I purchased the domain which in turn means it sits, doing nothing, for months.

I have decided that it is time to take an inventory of all the domains that I have and organise them in an excel spreadsheet which I will make available here shortly for anyone else that wishes to organise their domain names. Keeping things organised is certainly high up on my list of things to do now as the more “perfect” ideas I have the more domains I can forget about.

It is my hope that I will also re-discover some old forgotten gems that have now aged and been grabbed by most of the search engines meaning that if I spend a little time putting a fesh new set of pages up, I may be able to get some cash out of them after all.

Now here comes the point where I talk about my master plan. I intend to stick a “network bar” at the top of all of my sites which will be loaded from a central location. What this means is that all of the my sites will be accessible from all of my other websites with the only exception being my subdomain redirectors as they are not strictly websites at all.

The bar will not only allow me to keep track of all my projects, but may also invoke curiosity from visitors to each of the websites resulting in more traffic to the smaller websites and potentially more sales / clicks here and there.

I plan to split the bar into a few key categories. That is simple. What I am worried about is the technicalities behind loading the bar from a remote location and still getting it to fit correctly into every website. no doubt some tweaking will be needed, but at the moment I need to come up with how I will include the file from a remote server, especially if anything falls into an https connection, no doubt I will be jumping server-side for some coding solutions.

Anywho, I will keep you up to date on how this goes, and who knows, it may already be at the top of this very site by the time you are done reading this post.

As you can probably see I have now added the bar to the top of the site. Once I have the other sites set up they will appear in the drop down menus and the bar will appear on the other sites.

I should credit Oli as I snatched the menu bar code from one of his network sites, though I have made my own modifications. ;)

I have also completed the excel sheet and will post it for download tomorrow.

Another update. I decided to remove the bar and scrap the idea for now. I felt that it simply made the site get a bit clumsy and looked as if it was hosted on some free host network.

For now, the idea is dropped and I will just use my excel sheet for keeping track of my sites.

I may include the bar in a different form, but for now, its gone.

    Hi Dave,

How about a small, all-text-link footer bar? Having all your sites interlink to each other is definitely a plus from the search engine’s point of view. I’m talking about something a la Jonathan Wold; Check out the very bottom of his site.

BTW, great site! It’s going on my bookmarks.
